The NURPP is designed as a career development workshop to recruit talented investigators into urology research departments and assist in preparing a true career path for surgeon-scientists and investigators. The long-term goal of this meeting is to assist the AUA in creating a cohort of future researchers and leaders in research by providing critical supervisory skills. These steps are critical to urologic research in order to increase the number of funded investigators and increase both the quantity and the quality of funded grants.

This is a joint effort between the AUA, SBUR and NIDDK. The symposium is intended to be a rigorous and in-depth discussion of basic and translational aspects of inflammation and fibrosis and how they impact development of non-cancer urological diseases and conditions. The goal is to assemble leading urology researchers, clinical urologists and junior investigators at the AUA Annual Meeting and to advance progress in urology research. Travel awards will be available for early career investigators.

The treatments of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are based mainly on symptoms evaluation and ruling out other objectively demonstrable pathology (e.g. bacterial cystitis, bladder tumor). The biologic causes of LUTS are not precisely understood and a better understanding of the pathophysiology underlying LUTS would improve evaluation and management of patients with these symptoms. A better understanding of bladder sensation/afferent signaling would be important. Also, biomarker discovery, as applied to LUTS, could help advance the basic understanding of LUTS. This meeting will be comprised of 3 sessions. The first session is to examine the role of how bladder afferent signaling might be modulated by inflammation, purinergic and TRPV1 signaling pathways. The second session is on technologic measurements of afferent bladder signals including fMRI and NIRS. The third session is to understand how urinary biomarkers have been used to better understand pathophysiology of kidney diseases and how these researchers can help urologic researchers understand LUTS

The Research Forum is the only event which provides an opportunity to highlight the best research talent from a number of AUA Specialty Societies and the AUA Sections. The program will feature up to nine presentations on innovative, relevant and potential impactful research projects that will be of great interest to the basic and clinical research communities. All members of the Research Council, AUA sections and several specialty societies are asked to nominate one of their top early career investigators to present a brief, entertaining presentation on their most interesting, innovative work. The presenters are allowed eight minutes for their talk and approximately two minutes for Q&A. A panel of judges will select the top three presentations.
